To The Women Who Play (A Poem)

I wonder how you are. Trying to be a bigger version of yourself since the world doesn't always take kindly to your talents. Whether the color of your skin is too dark, bright, or unprovoked, we all pick up the same ball. That is what we share. This thing that somehow brings us together as women. Ever since the day you came into this life, a platform was already set for you. People can't help but play favorites. I see how you stay longer after practice, just to get those extra reps in. Just to tell coach "look, I can do this. Give me a chance." Then when something is done wrong against you, I see you trying to speak your peace and then automatically deemed as "aggressive" or "too emotional". It is like an unnecessary game of chess. Be cautious of your moves or how you display yourself. Be ready for any kind of war in training. It changes like the seasons. One day, it feels like everyone wants to grow together. Then the next, we are pinned against each other on purpose. It can be draining and sometimes, even demoralizing. How can we be women and bring each other down? How can we be teammates and not look out for each other? I see the lives of many and then I see myself. This journey prepared me for reality. Like shooting stars rapidly firing in the sky.
The many basketball players I have crossed paths with. I have seen, experienced, and witnessed their stories. Their fight for survival, their kindness, or their weakness. A girl's world is competitive. It can get political. It can get emotional and personal. Not only that, but women will also always have to fight even harder in society. It is more than just picking up a ball. It becomes your everything. It is your own story.
To the women who play, there is a growing change among us. The world is slowly starting to understand our plight, our power, and appreciation. We play because we simply just love what we do. Women of all races, colors, genetics. Holding hands and winning championships. The women that are building businesses and awareness reflect off their courage and generosity as basketball players. The women who are speaking for human rights and standing up for those they love.
I wonder how you are. No, better yet. I wonder where you are going. I cannot wait to see the greatness you become. The greatness you'll continue to be.
