The Purpose and Representation of an Athlete
Stand, Speak, or Become a better version of yourself.
I have taken some mini-breaks throughout the day on social media because of the mass discussions and visual repetitions of violence. Although people are wanting change, I believe for the safety of our mental health, we should recognize when it becomes too personal or emotionally conflicting.
With this social unrest at its peak, we as athletes must have some sort of conversation. Whether it be for yourself, for friends, and or family. The true meaning behind sports is breaking the racial barriers that divide us. We all come together and play the game that we love. With that, we must stand together for each other. That is what matters most.
Some are afraid or aren't as confident to speak in public. That is fine because nobody is entitled to be this superior voice for the world. Everyone has their own way of communicating. Just like in basketball. Speak your own way, whether it's with one person, many people, or through artistic means. It's still a form of expression towards something important.
Nevertheless, the one complicated factor of this rising cultural problem is the idea that people are playing the "trend card". This means that when something serious occurs, it can sometimes drown the quality of the movement itself. There are people that would join along just so they could feel a part of something, cover up their past mistakes, or simply out of love. Everyone has their reasons. However, the overall message should always reflect on the purpose of individual growth. We should ask ourselves how we could be better or make others feel more welcomed on teams. The positive energy shared with one another can lead us in the right direction for sports and athletes.
If not now, then when?
We all know a friend, a teammate, or even a stranger that has experiences we can't relate to. So, what better way to help each other than to listen to each other's stories? What is our purpose besides putting a ball through the hoop? Why do we play basketball in the first place? There are many questions with various solutions. It's just a matter of time before we all decide what we stand for.
